Rick researching in Europe

My annual guidebook research keeps our tours ahead of the crowd.

I'm happy to introduce you to our 2009 tours. As we do every year, we've taken what's been a proven success, evaluated hundreds of new ideas (from my book research, our tour guides, and tour members), and then fine-tuned each itinerary to bring you even more travel thrills per mile, minute and dollar.

Worried about the euro? Don’t! When you make your deposit on a 2009 Rick Steves tour, your price is locked and guaranteed — with absolutely no add-on currency or fuel surcharges. (When you shop around for a tour, look carefully to see what other companies promise. Do they guarantee they won’t add extra charges to your final tour payment?)

You'll be happy to learn that our 2009 lineup looks a lot like 2008, but with a few especially nice surprises.

The Best of St. Petersburg, Tallinn & Helsinki in 9 Days is a completely new itinerary for us, but one we've researched extensively. This trio of Baltic cities has a remarkable array of art, history and sights to offer travelers. We’ve also picked some great departure dates, so you shouldn’t need to pack your parka.

The two new fall, 2008 Spain tours we launched just a few weeks ago — the Best of San Sebastián & Basque Countryside in 7 Days and the Best of Barcelona & Madrid in 8 Days — have gotten off to a great start, and they are returning with a wider range of departure dates for 2009.

Elsewhere in Europe, the strong euro has kept our pencils sharp. We've taken a close look at each itinerary to make sure we're giving you maximum travel thrills per day and dollar. In a few cases, we found we could deliver a better-value tour in fewer days. As a result, you'll save time and money on these slightly shortened 2009 tours: the Best of Sicily in 9 Days, the Heart of Italy in 9 Days; the Best of England in 14 Days; and the Best of Germany, Austria & Switzerland in 14 Days.

Our remaining two dozen itineraries for 2009 will look a lot like the 2008 versions — featuring the "small groups, great guides and no grumps" that have made our tours so popular for the past 30 years.

One exciting change affecting all 2009 itineraries is that we'll have a limited number of private single rooms. These optional, extra-cost single supplements will go fast, so if you'd like one, be sure to book soon!

Browse through all our itineraries, from the Scottish highlands to the beaches of Greece, and you'll find refinements and pleasant surprises that promise to make 2009 a great year to experience Europe — affordably — the Rick Steves way.

We hope you can join us!
